Jade with new forks from DigRite

Here is a picture of myself with my new forks, all the way from DigRite in Perth, Western Australia. I decided I would purchase these guys to make handling turf and bags of sand a lot easier. They are bloody awesome and have saved me a lot of effort, the forks also can be taken off the frame to make transporting them very easy.

I would love some feedback on an option for my new TURF GURU logo.

2 projects completed in April

Longford Queen Arms Hotel Beer Garden.

Longford Queen Arms Hotel Beer Garden

This was just a comfortable one day job. The turf was direct stuck to a concrete slab. This project was quoted on a long time ago, and due to the renovations at the hotel it was decided that the turf would be the last thing to be done. It was quite tricky as the area was in almost full shade most of the day, mainly due to season we are in and the area being at the southern end of a double storey building. The concrete slab slopes towards a 300mm x 300mm storm water pit which was left exposed to assist with the water making its way to the trap.

Here are a couple of pictures using a new product called Summer Envy. This is a 35mm landscaping grass which is super realistic. It’s a very nice looking grass which has been designed to stand up to traffic a lot better than other grasses. The individual blades of grass are a lot thicker which makes it a little bit more special.

As you can see in the above picture the leaves do really look cool on a completely artificial lawn. It is important to keep areas of turf clear of leaves and anything else that can nestle into the tufts of turf and potentially rot down and create organic matter in the tufts of turf. Keeping it clean will limit the chances of weeds growing in the turf.

TOOL OF THE MONTH

Hand Stamper

Hand Stamper

This tool has only just been invented, well almost I have used similar tools which are designed for asphalt works (with a square base) but I have modified this one to make compacting gravel bases possible in the areas that a standard vibrating plate can’t get to. It have a square end and also a triangle end with allows me to get the tool into just about any corner of a job which means 100% of the area will be perfectly compacted. In the past I have attempted to compact these areas with the back of a rake or a steel trowel. The tool weighs about 20kg.

INSTALL TIP OF THE MONTH

This month I am going to talk about brushing the tufts of artificial grass up into a vertical position prior to infilling with kiln dried sand. This time of year in Tasmania the weather is quite cold and there is less sun every day up until June the 21st. The best thing to do when the weather is like is to head to Cairns….. Another way to overcome this is to be really smart with the days that you lay the turf

  • pick the warmest/sunniest day for installing turf
  • leave the turf to sit in the sun for as long as possible before cutting in
  • pick the hours where the turf area will get maximum sun
  • brush the turf from the opposite end (to usual) using the bristle brush going very slow, this will stand the tufts of turf up into a vertical position in any weather condition
